The Physiological Functions of Caffeine and Their Related Mechanisms

Abstract: Caffeine, one of the most widely consumed psychostimulants and dietary components, showed complicated effects on the nervous system, endocrine system, respiratory and cardiovascular system. It also showed anticarcinogenic activity. However, intake of caffeine may increase the risk of osteoporosis and abortion. Recent advance in the research on caffeine’s physiological functions and their related mechanisms was reviewed in this paper.
